第10回フライドレッシング・コンテストを振り返って
コンテストも10回を迎えました。今回はドイツのヘルベルト・ポール氏（Herbert Pohl）がめでたくグランプリに輝きました。
彼は1998年に開催された、第７回フライドレッシング・コンテストに初参加し入賞。以来３度のコンテストと３回のコンペティションにエントリーし続け、常に安定した成績を収めてきました。
それは彼が当初からサーモンフライについて造詣が深かったことと、それをドレッシングするのに必要な基礎テクニックを全て備えていたからです。
しかし彼は自分のスタイルを主張することに大変慎重でした。
そうしたアプローチの仕方に変化が表れたのは、2000年春に開催された第４回のコンペティションでした。
彼はその時、Colour Explosion と Night Hawk in Dee fashion の二つのオリジナル作品でエントリーしました。私はその時から彼の作品が大きく飛躍したと感じています。次の第９回コンテストに出品したMorning
Sunでは、色彩の調和が更に進み、今回のグランプリ受賞作Black Magicに繋がったと思います。
Black Magic は各バットとインディアン・クロウの色彩が見事にマッチしています。それだけで十分に見応えのある作品なのですが、本当の素晴らしさは、このフライが間違いなく魚を狂わす姿に仕上がっていることです。
優れたフライとは何か。このフライがその解答の一つです。

A General Comment on the 10th Fly Dressing Contest
German Fly dresser Mr. Herbert Pohl won the Grand Prix prize in
this 10th Contest.
In 1998, he started to enter the contest. From the first time
he had a profound knowledge of salmon fly and supreme technique
to dress them. That is the reason why he has been ranking as a
top dresser since then.
Although, he took a cautious attitude to express his own style
of art.
At the 4th competition held in 2000, I noticed that he started
to express his own style.
He made two flies. One is "The Colour Explosion" and
the other is "Night Hawk in Dee Fashion". Those two
flies had particular attractiveness that I could not see in his
previous work. In the next contest, he dressed "The Morning
Sun". This fly had good harmony of colours which became the
foundation of the fly "The Black Magic" at this time.
In his work "The Black Magic", we can see beautiful
harmony between the butt and the Indian Crow. And what is better,
this fly has great power to attract the fish that is the most
essential and successful part I believe.
We expect his work of creation with pleasure in the future.
