2000年のガウラを目指して準備を開始したのは１年前。キャスティングの練習、フライタイイング、英会話まで、できる限りの準備をしたつもりだ。
８月５日にノルウェーに向けて出発したが、あろうことか旅行代理店が目的地を間違って航空券を発券するという大間違いをしでかし、おかげでトロンハイムより1300キロ北のトロムソという町から２日もかけてようやくガウラに到着した。初めてのノルウェーへの旅でとてつもないハプニングに出会い、ノルウェジアン・フライフィッシャーズ・クラブの面々もさすがに驚いた様子。
着いたその日から釣りを始め、翌日ローズマリーでグリルスを１匹釣り上げた。この念願の１匹で本当にほっとして、何か報われたような気がした。
ガウラでの釣りはそれまで行っていたアラスカの「釣れればなんでもいい」釣りとちがって、これが本当の釣りなんだなと思わされた。どんなフライがいいのかあれこれ考えたり、重いラインや軽いラインを使い分けたり、条件が良ければ朝から晩まで時には一晩中釣りをする。滞在中ずっと釣りに集中することができて、本当に楽しかった。
結果的には最終日にグリルスをもう１匹釣り、４〜５キロのサーモンをファイト中に逃してしまったが、こんなに楽しく、厳しく、充実した釣りは初めてだった。また来年も行こうと、今から準備を始めている。

When I decided to go to the river
Gaula in Norway, I had no experience of fly fishing. I had been
to Alaska for salmon fishing with spinning rod for past several
years. But I felt the fishing in Alaska was not enjoyable, because
it was "hunting salmon" not "fishing salmon".
Then a year ago, I started to practice fly casting, fly tying
and speaking English.
On the 5th of August of this summer, I left for Trondheim which
was the final destination of this flight. But unfortunately
my airline ticket did not say "Trondheim". It was
mistaken for "Tromso", the city of 1300km North from
Trondheim. And I believed Tromso was one of abbreviations from
Trondheim! I hired a car in Tromso, and drove to the river Gaula
for 2 days!
After this big adventure, I started fishing and caught one grilse
with Rosemary from Langoy Pool. It was my first fish in the
Gaula. I was very happy. Completely Happy!
Mr. Valentin Maul taught me various things of salmon fishing,
about flies, fly lines, and water conditions, etc. Finally I
could catch one more grilse and lose one salmon. It was the
most wonderful fishing trip I have had ever before.
Now I continue to practice fly casting and make more flies for
next year.
