PART 6<< PART 7 -- Grilse
７月、期待のガウラは渇水。連日の乾燥した天気で、淵に溜まっているビッグフィッシュが見えるところまで、水位は下がった。

When we returned to the river Gaula in July, the water was too low and clear. From the bridgee we could see many big salmon in the bottom of the pool.

　
が、いくら淵にサーモンが止まっていても、ひたひたのこの水では上がってこない。

But the salmon could not move because of this water level.

　

目を疑うばかりの縮小したレナプール。６月はここで連続３匹の10キロオーバーを釣ったというのに。

The Renna pool where we could catch 3 salmon of over 10kg in June, was very small.

　

川幅の狭い上流部を試すが、魚の気配がない。「なーんにもいないねここは・・」「見渡す限り一匹の魚も跳ねない」と諦め気味。

Ken tried to fish upstream for waiting for the salmon running up from the pool under the bridge. But there were no jumps and no splashing.

　
瀬はどこも底石が現れ、サーモンはお腹をこすらなければ上がれない。瀬の一番水の多いところと、瀬の直ぐ下を狙う。

The hed of the pool was too shallow for salmon running up.

　
こんな渇水でも魚が上がってくればチャンスはあるのだが、今年は何しろフレッシュが少なすぎる。

Ken thought that there were few fresh salmon in the river in those weeks and it was something different from normal year in the Gaula.

　
いよいよドライフライの出番。新作のマドラーにリッフルヒッチを施す。

Ken prepared his original dry flies this season. This is "No.1 Ken's Muddler" tied on LD3 Silver Fiesta single hook #4. He tied with a riffled hitch.

　
SS1612Dでアップストリームのドライフライを試してみる。まずはナチュラルに流して、そのままダウンストリームでドラッグを掛てドリフトさせる。その距離は何と30m。

Usuing SS1612D, Ken cast upstream, drifted the Muddler naturally first and continued to drift downstream. It was drifting more than 30m!

　

マリーアンの投げたドライフライに来たグリルス。シルバーフィエスタに巻いたマドラーが、グリルスの口のサイドをがっちりフッキング。

Finally Mary Anne caught a grilse on the Muddler. The fish was completely hooked up by a single hook.

手前の白い点がドライフライ。後ろの跳ねはパー。

A salmon parr and a dry fly in midnight.
　 　

今年のベストプールはティルセット。よく釣れたし、よくサーモンの跳ねが見えた。最終日の夜中、グリルスの群れが通りかかった。

NFC's best pool of this season was Tilseth. The last night of our fishing, we met a small school of grilse.
　 　

ただし、今年はグリルスもフレッシュが少ない。新しい魚が来ないと、居着きを狙うが、食いは悪いし、外れやすい。

We could cach some grilse, but they were not fresh.
　 　
これもマリーアンが釣ったグリルス。フライはフィエスタのチューブフライバージョン。

Mary Anne caught another grilse with Fiesta tube fly version. Ken's Fiesta is very famous fly for catching monster Brown Trout in the lake in Japan.
　 　

最終日のレナプールは、瀬を歩いて向こう岸に渡れそう。ローウォーターのドライフライもおもしろいが、やはりドライの出番がないほど、豊富な水が欲しい。

その後、ヨーロッパを襲った干ばつはご存じの通り。ガウラは未だに減水の一途。魚たちは、川がこうなることを知っていて上がってこなかったのでしょうか。

We know that in Europe, terrible dry weather is still continueing now (even in the middle of August). Did the salmon know the river without enough water for them in this summer?
