Empty Pools Again

Today it was mostly cloudy from the morning. The temperature was 10 ℃ in the morning and rose to 20 ℃ in the daytime. Occasionally squalls. These things were desirable for fishermen as far as there were salmon.

Yesterday we saw salmon jump but got no bite. Surely a lot of salmon came upstream. Today we rushed to the river, full of happy expectations. The water level, the temperature and midges or other mosquitoes, every factor seemed to guarantee our catch of salmon.

But salmon never came. No salmon came upstream from the sea into the river? If a lot of salmon come upstream, local anglers will usually gather together on the bank. But recently they decreased in number. Only foreign anglers stuck on the river.

Local anglers in Gaula never come to the river when there is no salmon. They know well the way of keeping their motivation. We, careless foreign anglers in the river, are discouraged enough. Some anglers decided to be back home halfway.

We can do nothing today. On the bank a certain flower which is usually in full bloom in this season has only tiny leaves. Salmon must know a month delay of seasonal changes, too, and hesitate to come upstream.

Salmon fishermen need to book a beat in advance and popular beats have been reserved for next 5 years. Even if we keep a beat that does not guarantee to catch salmon, as is the case of this year.

In Japan the river is a public domain and every one is allowed to fish whenever they want while season is opening. They go fishing when they have got a feeling that they are going to catch some fish. Of course, we know that both systems have good points and bad points.

So much for today. We place our hope on tomorrow.
